The (Un)Enlightenment and What it Means to be Modern

'Green Horses' - Bruce Nauman

Our ideas about progress, history, and human nature often have their roots in the Enlightenment. The British political philosopher John Gray offers a unique way to understand the major events of our time and the role that Enlightenment thinkers, from Locke to the Positivists, have played in our assumptions about the world.

Gray presents a nuanced challenge to our expectations about the linear nature of history and Utopian dreams that's well-worth examining. In this Olio, we will explore Gray's ideas through a discussion about terrorism, Marx, neo-liberalism, Pax Americana, and what it means to be human.
