OlioHouse | The Love Symposium

Aphrodite

What is love? Why do we love? What is its goal? When we love, what is it we desire?  Can there be Love (with a capital L) without a person doing or receiving the love? Is love always love of or for someone or something? Can love be rational? And if we’re rational about love, where does that leave passion? Why is the idea of a soulmate so alluring?  These are just some of the questions that Plato raised over 2,000 years ago in Symposium, a series of speeches delivered at a drunken dinner party. It remains the most famous conversation in the history of western philosophy, and it’s no wonder given that the topics the drunken revelers discussed still perplex us today.

Plato wrote that, “Wonder is the feeling of the philosopher, and philosophy begins in wonder,” and in this Olio Symposium, we will wonder about the nature and meaning of love.  We’ll delve into some of the ways the Ancient Greeks explained love, with a special emphasis on Aristophanes and his fantastic soulmate myth; Socrates, who recounts what he learned from the wise woman Diotima, such as that Love is a desire for wisdom, beauty, immortality, and possession of the good; and the very handsome and very drunk Alcibiades, who is heartbroken because his passion for Socrates is unrequited.

You don’t need to have read Plato's Symposium before you attend.  We will read the story, reenact some of the scenes, and wonder together.  We’ll also do a workshop where Skye will guide you through writing exercises to create your own speech on love, and you’ll have the opportunity to present them after dinner. Speech giving and intoxication are both optional.
