Living Room Salon | Music and Environmentalism

Green Peace

When we think about climate change, images of dripping glaciers and homes submerged by a rising sea may come to mind. But what does climate change sound like? How does climate change alter the soundscape, the every day sounds of a space or place, around us? And how have composers and artists responded to climate change and environmentalist efforts? Join our discussion where we will explore how music and sound studies can change the way we think about our environment and be used as a tool for advocacy.

In this Olio, we will discuss examples such as museum exhibits that showcase the sounds of melting glaciers to prompt discussion on global warming, the ecological costs vs. benefits of charity concerts such as Live Earth, songs and sounds of the Appalachian coal mining debate, an orchestra that features instruments made of recycled materials from a landfill, and the role and value of silence.

*This Olio will take place in an apartment on 145th st, west Harlem.

Location: Living Room

Address will be shared with attendees.

Living Room Salons are members only and take place in an apartment to provide an intimate learning environment.

Interdisciplinary Learning with the Best Professors

Think Olio is not about learning a new skill or adding credentials to your resume. It is about getting together with other people and expanding our worldview. It exists as a conduit for fruitful discussions, a dissent from the regurgitation of facts, and an embrace of new perspectives.
