Environmental degradation is one of the 21st centuries most pressing concerns. Our unsustainable relationship with Nature is fueled (pun intended) by a long held view in Western thought that Man is separate from Nature. This Olio will attempt to provide a historical overview (beginning with Plato and working through the Western philosophical tradition) of the views that support this problematic relationship.
Looking at a few different definitions of nature, we will discuss how to best engage with our environment. Among other things, we'll ask if we should be repairing the damage we've already inflicted or rather get out of the way and let nature repair itself?
This Olio will conclude with an open discussion, questioning if it would be beneficial to abandon the concept of Nature entirely.
