The Highest Expression of Social Activity: The Party

None at Berg'n

Thu, Mar 22 at 7:30 p.m.   |   90 minutes

Party at Berg'n as we watch clips from the show, discuss its social importance in today's artistic world, and discover the origins of Think Olio's new favorite word: Scenius.

Started as a punk satire of late night shows such as Hugh Hefner’s Playboy After Dark, TV Party was a no wave variety show that invited the audience to the party (literally). With the tagline, “The TV show that’s also a party," the show exemplifies No Wave’s DIY and IDGAF style, with its grainy shots, audio drops, on-screen telegraffiti provided by Jean-Michel Basquiat, and frequent guests like Fab 5 Freddy, Debbie Harry, Klaus Nomi, David Byrne, and the occasional David Bowie.

As TV Party’s 1981 manifesto states, “TV PARTY is a medium for establishing a PARTY NETWORK. THE PARTY is the highest expression of social activity—the co-operative production of FUN. THE PARTY is the first step in organizing society for mutual interests. TV PARTY believes that SOCIAL affinity groups will provide the foundation for any effective political action.

Come join the party at Berg'n as we watch clips from the show, discuss its social importance in today's artistic world, and discover the origins of Think Olio's new favorite word: Scenius.

What is Think Olio?

Think Olio is here to put the liberation back into the liberal arts.

Classically, the liberal arts, were the education considered essential for a free person to take an active part in civic life. To counter a humanities that has been institutionalized and dehumanized we infuse critical thinking, openness, playfulness, and compassion into our learning experience.
