*Olio Concert* The Sound of Resistance: Free Jazz & Civil Rights

None at The Commons Brooklyn

Wed, Nov 8 at 7:30 p.m.   |   90 minutes

Join us for a kaleidoscope of musical excerpts and conversation as we delve into Jazz music and it role in the resistance.

*This is an Olio lecture and concert woven together*

Avant-garde or "free" jazz has its roots in the era of Civil Rights, Black Power, and the Black Arts Movement of the 1960s and 1970s. The music came into being as music of resistance and, in some ways, has continued to be a medium for the expression of resistance in the decades since. This Olio will bridge the 1960s era with a number of contemporary artists who are continuing to innovate and evolve their craft while applying it to new social contexts.

Musicians include : John Murchison, Daniel Carter, Dan Kurfirst, & Eli Wallace

Teacher: Cisco Bradley
Venue: The Commons Brooklyn

What is Think Olio?

Think Olio is here to put the liberation back into the liberal arts.

Classically, the liberal arts, were the education considered essential for a free person to take an active part in civic life. To counter a humanities that has been institutionalized and dehumanized we infuse critical thinking, openness, playfulness, and compassion into our learning experience.
